4 Health Tips for Living in China

If you are moving to China or have recently moved to China you may notice there are some very specific health differences. Most expatriates have adapted to these changes with ease, while others may find these changes difficult. From public, to private, to individual health, living in China comes with its’ own unique challenges. To help make your transition easier, we have listed 4 health tips for living in China to make living a healthier lifestyle in China more effortless.

Tip 1: Read About China

Whether you are planning a move or have already made the trip, pick up a book about China. You will find the information will help you not only learn about China’s culture, but also their traditions, manage your expectations, and find helpful guides. This is especially true about China’s healthcare. Become familiar with China’s healthcare system and discuss your healthcare options with your provider. This is especially useful if you do this before you move.

Tip2: Control your exposure to Air Pollution

Air pollution is a problem in almost every city in China. This would especially be a concern for you if you have lung or heart problems. Even healthy people may develop symptoms. The best action you can take, is to take control. Utilize indoor air purifiers in your home, limit the amount of time you spend outdoors (especially on days where the air pollution is really bad), or considering wearing a N95-rated air pollution mask. N95 means the mask blocks 95% of fine particles. By taking these steps, you can dramatically decrease your total exposure to air pollution.

Tip 3: Don’t stop Exercising

This may seem like an obvious one, but don’t stop exercising. Go sightseeing, take walks, utilize inside gyms, etc. Exercising outside is still better than no exercise at all! You should aim for at least 2 hours of moderate exercise each week to stay healthy. If you do plan on exercising outside on days that have high air pollution, make sure you wear a properly fitted mask.

Tip 4: Pay attention to your food

Basic food safety should be implemented wherever you go. Good safety is a concern everywhere in the world, and especially in China. Organic food is always a good choice to avoid foods with harmful toxins. High prices and availability may be an issue with organic food but you can also take advantage of the next level, known as Green Food in China. Green Food claims to use much less toxins and chemicals. Bigger chain supermarkets also have a growing selection of organic foods in China, such as Walmart.

These tips are just some of the many things you can do to ensure a healthy lifestyle while living in China. Don’t forget to call and speak with your healthcare provider so you have all the information you would need in case of an emergency or in any instance where you would seek medical help.
