Google Glass Helping to Build Airplanes

Do you remember when Google Glass first appeared? Many were excited about the new invention but despite the promising focus group results, google glass was a consumer nightmare. The entire product was a flop minus the excited few who bought them. Yet google glass is still finding their way into the workflows of professionals, specifically for Boeing. According to Boeing’s research and technology division, they’ve used the glass to construct aircraft wire harnesses. Normally a technician has to manually build out the huge and complex web of wires required to connect electrical systems.

Using the glass to replace the computer monitor cut production time down by 25% for the wire harnesses, according to Boeing. Google glass also reduced related error rates by half. At first the technology would not work for this application because of its inability to pull information from Boeing’s database in real time. That didn’t stop them. Instead, Boeing asked Skylight, a smart glasses software program, to build and produce a higher-quality app. Needless to say, they were successful. Thanks to google glass the technician won’t have to constantly switch focus from computer screen to wires.

Now Boeing will be using the technology regularly and are planning on expanding the application, according to a report from COI.com. One of the coolest features of the glass application is the app also supports Glass voice commands and allows users to stream what they’re seeing to another technician in case something unexpected happens.
